Dr. Harold Hong, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist with a deep-seated passion for aiding recovery from substance use disorders and addiction. His approach is holistic, integrating family-of-origin trauma recovery, mindfulness practices, and the judicious use of medication and somatic therapies. This unique methodology is informed by both his personal recovery journey and his extensive professional work with patients, aiming to build a robust foundation for sustained recovery.

Dr. Hong’s academic journey began at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy. His pursuit of understanding the human condition led him to complete a dual MD and MA in Bioethics, with a focus on the theology of medicine and the care of souls. During his psychiatric residency at Duke University, where he served as the chief resident of the Family Studies Clinic, Dr. Hong concurrently earned an MBA from the Duke Fuqua School of Business in Health Sector Management. Dr. Hong then spent over six years working for Durham VA Medical Center helping patients progress towards recovery via talk therapy and medication management.

As a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to mental health, Dr. Hong founded Provia Healthcare, a multi-specialty mental health provider based in North Carolina. Before this venture, he honed his strategic and management skills as an associate at McKinsey & Co., advising insurance companies, health systems, and health sector investors in their healthcare management consulting practice.

Dr. Hong’s commitment extends beyond his professional life into his community. He was instrumental in establishing City Well UMC in Durham, N.C., and serves as a director on the board of Prevent Child Abuse America, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing child abuse through research, policy advocacy, and support of home visiting programs.

In addition to his other roles, Dr. Hong collaborates with the New Waters team to medically review each piece of content that is published.
