Drug and alcohol treatment programs vary, so not every treatment option available is covered by Aetna insurance. There are two types of insurance: Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) and Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). These insurance plans typically cover substance abuse and mental health treatment, but they differ in many ways.

PPO insurance plans are flexible. You can choose in- or out-of-network providers, but the out-of-pocket costs for out-of-network healthcare providers may be higher. An HMO carrier limits coverage to providers within a smaller network, though the out-of-pocket costs are typically lower.
